The time when you could leave your home without locking the door and worry if someone would get in and steal something is long gone. Now you have to lock the door even if you are going just around the corner to buy milk or cigarettes.
They didn't worry that somebody might pilfer through their valuables while they were gone. They didn't have to be concerned that someone might sneak through an unlocked front door while they tinkered in the garden. Times have changed.
One of the solutions to this is buying a wireless home security system. They are very effective and usually very easy to install. They are also inexpensive and consist of a main starter system and motion sensors which are installed on doors and windows. They are quite portable, so if you move they go with you to your new home.
Another big advantage is that they use much less electricity than, for example, outdoor floodlights.
One other thing about wireless home security systems is that they don't only serve as alarm systems. They are also capable of notifying others if you need help or if there is a health emergency. All you need to do to trigger the siren is press an emergency button on the remote.
There are many new types of easy-to-install wireless systems available. The most sophisticated ones can have from one to 16 different door, window and motion-detecting sensors monitored by a main control unit. If a sensor detects a break-in, the alarm sounds and it indicates which door or window.
The way these systems work is that there is a communication between each sensor, the remote control and the main control unit using radio frequency. So the following happens: someone breaks in and trips a sensor which then notifies the main unit. Then the sound alarm is activated and the lights are automatically switched on. This usually scares off the burglar.
A supervised burglar alarm system is best. The main control unit regularly checks each sensor for proper operation. It will indicate often with a flashing light and sensor number, when a battery is weak.
If you have some valuables which you want to make sure are well protected, there are also motion detecting sensors which are self-contained with a built in loud siren. You can also install them at the base of the stairs.
Another type of motion detecting sensor screws into a standard outdoor light socket. It only switches on your highpower floodlights when motion is detected. These can also send a signal to switch on indoor lights.
Another inexpensive unit is a locking rod with a battery-powered alarm. You can mount it on a sliding patio door or above a window. If it is moved, a sound alarm is immediately activated.
